Surf City Nissan Auto Loan Terms 101

Understanding car loan terms can help you if you're in the market for a new car. Surf City Nissan wants to help and guide you as you purchase your vehicle. Here are some basics you should know...

Before you buy a car, you need to do your homework. This involves learning the meaning of certain car loan terms you may encounter that can affect your financing. Understanding them will help you know what goes into the dealer’s pricing of a car and enable you to better negotiate how much you will pay, as well as the terms of your car loan.

Amount financed: This is determined by multiplying the purchase price by the interest rate. Next, subtract that amount from the purchase price. Then add state taxes to that amount and subtract the down payment. AF = purchase price – (purchase price x interest rate) + tax – down payment.

Annual Percentage Rate (APR): The yearly cost of a loan to the borrower. It’s similar to the interest rate. However, it also includes other charges and fees so as to reflect the total cost of the loan.

Captive Finance Company: A finance company that is separate from a dealership but is owned by the same parent company in order to provide financing for the dealer’s customers. There may be incentives offered to use this company for your car loan.

Dealer charges: What the dealership charges for extras such as an extended warranty.

Dealer holdback: An allowance that the manufacturer gives to the dealer. It is usually between 2 and 3 percent of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) and allows the dealer to sell the vehicle at cost but still receive a small profit from the manufacturer.

Dealer invoice: The amount that a dealer is billed from the manufacturer for the car.

Destination charge: The fee charged for shipping, freight, or delivery of a vehicle to the dealer from the manufacturer or port of entry. This charge is passed on to the buyer without any markup.

Factory-to-dealer incentive: A discount or rebate offered by a manufacturer to move slow-selling cars or excessive inventories.

Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP): A manufacturer’s recommended selling price for a vehicle and its options.

Mark-up: The amount of profit that a dealer makes on a car. It is the selling price subtracted from the dealer invoice.

Monroney Sticker Price: The sticker on the car’s window listing its base price, manufacturer’s installed options, manufacturer’s suggested retail price, destination charge and fuel economy.

Sticker price: The same as the MSRP.

O.K. Don't even know why we need transmission fluid...but our wise and experienced Service Manager at Surf City Nissan, Gary Barr does and here is some basic info on the importance of transmission fluid and some helpful tips!

TRANSMISSION FLUID - WHAT IS IT?
Transmission fluid is a slippery liquid that acts as a lubricant for all of the moving parts inside your transmission. In an automatic transmission, this fluid also serves as a coolant and a viscous fluid that transmits power from the engine to the transmission. Changing automatic transmission fluid is best left to a mechanic equipped with a transmission flusher,

A variety of fluids are used for different transmissions.
Automatic transmissions use something called — shockingly — automatic transmission fluid.

Manual transmissions use a variety of oils: regular motor oil, heavyweight hypoid gear oil or even automatic transmission fluid in some cases. Your owner's manual will tell you what your transmission calls for.

WHY CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID?

Manual: In a manual transmission, the problem is not so much the fluid degradation, but rather fluid contamination. This contamination occurs over time as the synchronizers, bearings and gears in the transmission wear out. The resulting metal particles then float around in the lubricant. And we all know that oil with microscopic particles of metal in it does not lubricate as well as clean oil. So if these contaminants are not drained out, they will shorten the life of your transmission.

Automatic: Because more heat is generated in an automatic transmission, automatic transmission fluid actually degrades and breaks down with use.

In addition, like in a manual transmission, automatic transmission fluid will also become contaminated with worn bits of the transmission. If these contaminants are not drained out, they will shorten the life of your transmission.

WHEN

Manual: Most manufacturers recommend that manual transmission fluid be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Under heavy-duty use, some manufacturers suggest changing transmission fluid every 15,000 miles.

Automatic: Service intervals for an automatic transmission vary from every 30,000 miles ... to never. The typical service interval is 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Changing it more often does no harm.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T CHANGE IT?
If you don't change the transmission fluid on schedule, you'll be lubricating your transmission with metal shavings and other contaminants. This will shorten the transmission's life. The result could be a hefty boat payment to your mechanic. In other words, changing your transmission fluid at the correct interval is a good investment.

SHOULD I CHECK BETWEEN SERVICE INTERVALS
Yes. It's important to regularly check the transmission fluid level between service intervals. Letting your car run low on transmission fluid can cause the transmission to shift improperly — or not at all. It also can harm the internal parts of your transmission, which will not be properly lubricated. Unfortunately, you may not hear any noises or have other clues that your transmission is low on fluid, until it's too late. So it's important to get it checked.

Tip: Unlike engine oil, transmission oil doesn't burn up. So if you're low on transmission fluid, you almost certainly have a leak.

What is the big deal with changing the brake fluid? Seriously, I want to know and I know just the person to ask... Gary Barr (our friendly Service Manager at Surf City Nissan ) and this is the service tip he gave to me! Brake Fluid is extremely important. Check it and Change it every year or two. Here's why.

Brake fluid is a hot topic because most people don't know why it should be changed. Did you know the average motorist who drives 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year uses his brakes about 75,000 times a year? Did you know that nearly half of all motorists in a recent Car Care Council survey said brake failure was their number one fear amongst driving emergencies?

So consider this: After three years of service, the average boiling point of the brake fluid has dropped to a potentially dangerous level because of moisture contamination and may not meet minimum federal requirements for brake fluid.

Probably half of all cars and light trucks that are 10 or more years old in the U.S. have never had their brake fluid changed. Yet in many European countries, regular brake fluid checks are required, and half of all cars routinely fail such tests. That's a good case for changing brake fluid.

REPLACE BRAKE FLUID

Brake fluid is one of the most neglected fluid in vehicles today, yet is vitally important for safe driving. Consequently, professional technicians should be checking the fluid and recommending that the brake fluid be changed if it is contaminated. The issue is old brake fluid may not be safe if moisture contamination is above a certain level.

BRAKE FLUID PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Many experts have long recommended changing the brake fluid every year or two for preventative maintenance. Their rationale is based on the fact that glycol-based brake fluid starts to absorb moisture from the moment it is put in the system. The fluid attracts moisture through microscopic pores in rubber hoses, past seals and exposure to the air. The problem is obviously worse in wet climates where humidity is high.

After only a year of service, the brake fluid in the average vehicle may contain as much as two percent water. After 18 months, the level of contamination can be as high as three percent. And after several years of service, it is not unusual to find brake fluid that contains as much as seven to eight percent water.

This Top Vehicle Maintenance 101 tip is all about WINDSHIELD CARE.

Did you know that 90% of all driving decisions are based on a clear,unobstructed view of the road?

Here are some basic tips to ensure that your windshield does it's job and your vehicle's visibility is optimal!

REPLACE YOUR WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES EVERY 6 - 12 MONTHS. This is excellent maintenance and will contribute to driving visibility.

CHECK WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES FOR WEAR. Inspect wiper for signs of wear, such as cracked, ragged, torn or jagged edges. When wipers are worn they become flimsy and cannot effectively remove water from your windshield.

FILL WINDSHIELD FLUID RESERVOIR. Check your owner's manual to locate its washer fluid reservoir and then top it off. Each washer fluid has a certain percentage of alcohol in it to help clean bugs from your windshield and to ensure fluid air dries quickly.

CLEAN YOUR WINDSHIELD.Although this step seems easy and uncomplicated, the importance of a clean windshield is often overlooked. Be sure to use a streak-free solvent and remember to clean inside and out.

Test Your Battery Regularly Every time you bring your vehicle in for service, make sure you have it tested. Test your battery before you go on a long trip and after it's been recharged.

Clean Your Battery To ensure good connectivity. It is important to clean the battery container and terminals regularly. Make sure the terminals are free of dust and that there is no sulfur formation. You can use baking soda and water to clean any crust that forms on your battery, but make sure the vent caps are tight to prevent water or baking soda from entering cells.

Visually Inspect Your Battery Check your vehicle's battery for leaks and cracks and check battery cables for corrosion and exposed wires. If necessary, replace any worn items immediately to avoid further wear on your vehicle.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) selected the Nissan NV200 as the exclusive taxi of New York City beginning in late 2013. The award comes after a rigorous selection process that occurred over more than two years. The competition built upon more than a century of taxi industry heritage to drive the design and creation of a purpose-built vehicle, tuned to the city’s streets

About Taxi of Tomorrow
In 2007, City officials convened a group of stakeholders, including representatives of taxi drivers, owner and passengers, to create a set of goals for the next New York City taxi cab, a project called the Taxi of Tomorrow. In December 2009, the TLC issued a "request for proposals," inviting auto manufacturers and designers to submit their best ideas for a purpose-built vehicle to serve as a New York City taxicab. At the end of the evaluation, the Nissan NV200 was selected and will be the next New York City taxicab for ten years, beginning in 2013.

So what is the purpose of The Air Filters?

The Engine Air Filter helps to clean the air passing through the engine area into the vehicle. The Air Filter traps small particles of litter, debris (such as sand or dust) that can quickly build up and lead to poor acceleration, engine performance and alter your vehicles gas mileage.

The Cabin Air Filter helps provide cleaner air inside your car, so you don't breathe the the debris or dust while driving.

The all-new 2012 Nissan Versa is packing one mean compact car punch nowadays. And it’s bound to ruffle a few competitors’ feathers when it hits dealers next summer. Here’s why:

Riding on what Nissan calls its global V-platform, the Versa is 150-pounds lighter than the outgoing first-generation. Its new 1.6-liter four-cylinder pumps out 109 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque, and can be mated to a five-speed manual or second-generation CVT. Fuel economy for the mill is estimated at 30 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway or slightly better than the 2011 Toyota Corolla at 28 city/35 highway mpg with the five-speed stick.

As we suspected, the clean, unassuming exterior is nearly an exact replica of the current Chinese-market Sunny sedan. Designers continued the spartan theme inside, but this time around, rear passengers will be happy to know they have more legroom than a BMW 5 Series.

Well, I was just talking with Gary Barr (our amazing, wise and friendly Service Manager at Surf City Nissan) about the importance of basic maintenance on a vehicle.

Here is one Top Vehicle Maintenance tip regarding TIRES and the benefit of Nitrogen Inflation.

Nitrogen Inflation can extend the tread life on your tires, enhance handling, improve fuel efficiency, help the environment and really keep you safe on the road. How?

MAINTAIN CORRECT INFLATION PRESSURE- Nitrogen inflation retains optimal pressure for 3 to 4 times longer than traditional air inflation. This results in increased fuel efficiency and Big savings.
EXTEND TIRE TREAD LIFE - Air inflation causes oxidation, which can make the tire rubber brittle and cause it to lose tensile strength. Nitrogen keeps the tire in proper contact with the road, which prevents damages to the inner tire liners and belt packages.

NISSAN REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION AND INNOVATION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

- ‘Choose Zero’ Curriculum Rolls Out to 2.5 Million Grade School Students -

Recognizing that kids are often the most effective at creating change, Nissan North America, Inc. is launching an in-class and online educational outreach initiative called “Choose Zero” in elementary and middle schools this month. The curriculum, which features the 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF, is designed to empower kids to make and advocate for changes that reduce carbon emissions in their homes, schools and communities. Developed in partnership with Kaleidoscope Youth Marketing, the initiative is rolling out to 2.5 million students in 7,500 schools across the United States.

“Nissan is committed to empowering people of all ages – including children – to make changes that reduce carbon emissions,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America. “We are excited to bring environmental advocacy into classrooms through valuable resources for teachers, parents and the students while also educating them on the Nissan LEAF technology and environmental benefits.”

The program targets third through eighth grade students, along with their teachers and parents, in the seven Nissan LEAF launch markets: the states of Washington, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Tennessee, and Texas.

Educators are receiving tools and content focusing on science, technology, engineering and math through the teacher-targeted website teach.choosezero.com/. Curriculum experts from Cross-Curricular Connections (C3) and a panel of teachers from Chicago’s Math and Science Academy contribute to make in-class and take-home lessons that are standards-based and age appropriate.

The central online hub for the environmental education program is www.choosezero.com, which gives kids a fun, educational journey to see how their choices change everything. Interactive videos, state-specific facts and tips for an eco-conscious lifestyle also are featured.

Additionally, the program’s website offers parents and teachers the opportunity to sign up online for a chance to win a three-year lease on a Nissan LEAF. The sweepstakes runs until May 31, and parents and teachers can enter daily. There will be two parent winners and two teacher winners nationwide.

The Nissan LEAF is the world’s first affordable, all-electric car designed for the mass market. Launched in the United Sates, Japan and Europe in December 2010, the Nissan LEAF has a tested all-electric range of 100 miles, produces zero tailpipe emissions and doesn’t take a drop of gas.
